Facebook is helping thieves share stolen credit cards. Thanks, Mark Zuckerberg.

Wired is promoting sharing the article on Facebook in the left-hand margin. Promoting sharing on a platform that has so many sharing holes in it is a bit ironic.

 Small store big site
I just opened a box with 400 new decals for our stores! Stores can place these two-sided decals on their front doors and windows next to their Visa and Amex decals.

Please message us to get in front of the line for who will receive these first. :)

54% of people looking for a product go directly to Amazon. That’s not good for nearly anyone in our industry. Amazon takes a 30% cut and keeps all the customer’s contact information (email, tel, address). If you’re a retailer, you can’t operate a successful business giving away 30% of your 50% cut of a retail sale.

If you’re a brand, over the last few year you were probably relishing in selling direct, cutting out the rep commission, and getting 100% of the sale. Well now Amazon is your new retailer and rep and it’s going to take 30% and make you work for it. Amazon puts about nine ads for competing products on your page on Amazon. In this way, you have to constantly keep prices low and manage your page in order to not lose a sale. And you have to buy ads from Amazon. Amazon has you ...Read rest of Chalk

The default price floor for Smart Products is now $100. The old price was $50.

We increased the price floor to reduce the number of orders you may receive for small, 'one off' orders. Some Smart Brands have a $100 or $200 minimum order. By raising the price floor, we reduce the likelihood you'll have to place a special order yet not meet the minimum order.

Please note: even if an item have the price floor in effect, a customer will be prompted to call your store to order it, and can still add it to a registry.

You can edit your account to lower the price floor if you wish.

 cyber crime
NYC is forming a new group to help protect its infrastructure. I'd like to see a similar group formed to help protect its residents and businesses, as well as police business websites and hosting companies to ensure they're meeting accepted standards for security. Currently, our cyber security laws are reactive vs preventative.

Wedgwood

Wedgwood is in its 260th year shares Tableware Today. Josiah Wedgwood, the eleventh child of a potter, was a skilled potter himself by age nine—yet couldn’t use a traditional potter’s wheel because of a small pox inflicted injury. In 1765, Queen Charlotte gave him the right to use the title ‘Potter to the Queen.’ Fun fact: Josiah’s grandson was Charles Darwin.

 shopify
I was going to recommened reading this Shopify article about converting website visitors to shoppers but then I realized what a rip off Shopify is.

In the screen shot shown, we see Shopify promote nine apps. The apps use the 'freemium' model where you try it for free, then often quickly get stuck paying. In sum, Shopify is nickel and dime-ing users.

When you use Shopify, it's like going to Disneyland and paying for each ride separately. You think that the theme park will be fun but by the time you pay for each ride it saps your energy and you just want to leave.

Shopify should follow other e-commerce platforms and offer the most popular features as part of Shopify's built-in service that one gets out of the box when starting with the service. Ask yourself: why does one need to pay extra...Read rest of Chalk

How big a deal is cyber security? It’s about as important as car and highway safety—that’s the last time that insurers teamed up to tackle a topic, according to today’s WSJ.

The number of retailers that purchased stand alone cyber security doubled from 2014 to 2018, shares insurer Marsh.

 gartner
How do you get more customers to see your products? Tip: make your product names longer. Fill them with keywords and descriptive text.

Market research firm Gartner shares that a hair care line that ranks well on Amazon has 3x the number of words in product name and description areas as other brands.

Excerpt:

Maple Holistics’ current best-selling product, Biotin Shampoo, has 338 words in its product description and 35 words in the title and lists key ingredients like zinc.

In contrast, other Amazon-native brands average 89 words in product descriptions and 14 words in titles, while enterprise brands average 76 words in descriptions and 12 words in titles.

As an example, instead of calling a product "Dinner Plate" you may name it "Dinner Plate ~ Gold Rim with Glass 8" Round"
