Wanna see the future of retail? First, look back. Look back at the newspaper industry and its hard, swift fall over the last 15 years. Facebook (and other tech platforms) replaced newspapers across the country as the world’s information and advertising platforms. General lesson: platforms replace individual players. Next up: Amazon’s platform is going to substitute national brand (and retail) names with its private label business. Don’t like it? Amazon doesn’t care. It owns the world’s largest shopping platform. And it will make you its employee by almost force. You will “choose” to sell on the platform but really have no other choice. It forced Nike to do this last year, and many indie tabletop brands have caved, too.

My concern is we have an industry so focused on today’s orders that ...Read rest of Chalk

This may be the “most interesting store in the world” but I’ve walked by it many times and didn’t even know it was a store. Umm...that’s a problem. Retail locations need to clearly identify that passerbys are welcome and draw them in.

With that said, I’m gonna check this spot out :)

Saks essentially throws in the towel on cosmetics and moves that department from the first floor to the second. What now greets you? Handbags. The WSJ reminds us that department stores are on the ropes against online competitors, chains dedicated to cosmetics, and changing consumer tastes. Jewelry is now in the basement.

Your Bridge now allows your business to easily see how much you collected in sales taxes.

How to visit your Tax page:

1. Visit your Bridge. Login.

 gift registry
For Retailers:
Good news: the wedding registry season is here! Consider these facts:

1. This year 2.5 million weddings will occur in the U.S. That's 2.5 million potential gift registries for your store. :)

2. Amazon, Zola, and Crate & Barrel make millions from gift registry purchases. You will, too.

3. The average gift registry purchase is $142, and the average registry receives over $1,000 in gifts.

4. The online gift registry business is the one spot where indie stores are winning online.

What does this mean for your business?
The more brides that you get to register, the more you'll sell. Remember: each registry you get is worth $1k.

Your Registry Checklist:
1. How are you advertising your registry services to the public?

2. Do you have gift registry decals on your door? Ask Bridge for free...Read rest of Chalk

 credit card processing
Are you paying credit card fees each month? If so, you may be interested in what store owner Laura May did.

Laura May, who owns the Ivy House in Texas, was paying thousands of dollars in fees to accept credit cards in her store each month. She thought she may be paying too much in fees. She asked Bridge to review her credit card statements. Bridge reviewed the statements and found problems preventing her from getting the fair, lower rates. In the end, Bridge saved her more than $7,000 per year in fees.

We can often save you thousands of dollars like Laura. If you would you like to potentially save $7,000 this year, please email (jason@solarek.com) or call us (212-254-9654).

I'm confident that we'll save you money. If you send a statement, I'll give you $50. Read rest of Chalk

India has passed rules to encourage local businesses to grow and thwart Amazon’s bulldozing of smaller businesses. They call it the “national champion” program. I suggest that local states start a simlair program. Amazon, legally based in Delaware and overseas, isn’t a friend to your local town or state on account of its hurting indie businesses and skimping on taxes. Instead of cities competing for the Amazon HQ, they likely should’ve competed for solutions to stop big online entities from hollowing out their communities.

How can your local spot ‘champion’ you and your community over Amazon? Laws are a great way to accomplish as we can see by India’s success. Read rest of Chalk

What does preservation have to do with Amazon? Well, one is sometimes a government/city promoted and regulated attempt to preserve culture, practices and memories. For example, landmark preservation may be bestowed on a building and limit exterior changes to a building—like a famous old bookstore. Amazon, on the other hand, is emblematic of the opposite: it’s not about maintaining cultural norms like community or cultural centers. It often undermines cultural and civic locations by using Wall St.-backed money to artificially lower prices and swipe customers and economic output. End result: dead shopping streets across America. So why would a city (or government) that endorses cultural preservation give the cultural destroyer a $3 billion tax break? That’s what the Times starts to ask ...Read rest of Chalk

 walmart
There is a 'Cold War' battle going on between Amazon and Walmart, if you haven't noticed. Both are building platforms that soak up every other business and its products into their respective ecosystems. Walmart is late to the game, but its been on a binge recently buying Art.com and now its partnered with a sport apparel company Fanatics.

As a reference, Facebook, Instagram, and Bridge are all platforms.

What platforms are you on? What is your strategy to chart this battle? Are you a Walmart or Amazon 'soldier'?

 ny post
Wedding registry gifts are starting to include: Venmo. That's right, guests are starting to simply Venmo their 'gifts' to newlyweds, reports today's New York Post.

While at first glance this bypasses traditional gift giving routes like a store's gift registry, there is a silver lining. Your store can accept Venmo. Encourage brides to buy goods from you via Venmo. This adds a step, but the bride getting a nice gift (and the money getting to your store) is all that counts.

Amy Stavis in Tableware Today shares that 47% of New Jersey Millennials live with their parents, and nationally 74% aren’t married. This translates into a smaller gift registry market than 40 or 20 years ago.

With that said, Crate &Barrel, Target, and Zola are selling millions of registry gifts. Why shouldn’t your store? The gift registry market is easy pickings for stores that sell cups and plates. You already have the stock and offering the service costs almost nothing. And it’s a service that brands and Amazon—two of your competitors—can’t offer well.

Even with the downward trend, there will be 2.5 million weddings in the U.S. this year. That is potentially 2.5 million registries for your business. :)Read rest of Chalk

Amazon gives people products to review and doesn’t charge them for the gifts. This shows the power of reviews in driving purchases and in boosting a Google ranking. Amazon started its Vine review program more than 10 years ago—giving it a huge lead on competitors.
