Really hate a credit card brand? Do what Kroger did: just stop accepting it. Visa, along with AmEx, keeps raising its fees on merchants almost every month and claims to promote “customer choice.” That’s like promoting rioting in the name of looter choice. It’s not fair to keep giving out mileage and points cards and keep raising the fees on retailers.

AmEx ripped off customers reports today’s WSJ. Does that sound familiar? Again and again I butt heads with AmEx over their high fees. I really need to stop using their credit card. They promote a “small business” day, yet again and again charge high processing fees for services to small businesses. They’re a Janus and I don’t need bi-polar service providers.

Timo Sarpaneva is the focus of an exhibition at the Design Museum in Helsinki, Finland. He has had enormous influence on two of our Smart Brands partners Iittala and Rosenthal.

Also in the exhibition are photographs that tell some of his story — among them, images of the fantastical, crowd-attracting shop windows (adorned with glass harps and butterflies hanging from invisible wires) that he created for Iittala, the company that hired him in 1950. It was there that he made his name as a glass designer, of both art pieces and usable ones. In the latter category are the colored drinking glasses and beakers of the (pre-Internet) i series, for which he created a special logo: a boxy, lower case i that sits at the center of a small blood-red circle. Simple, bold, easy to identify and jolly, it ...Read rest of Chalk

There’s always a party pooper. New Hampshire is seeking to undermine the recent Supreme Court victory for small businesses by interfering with the ruling. The state (along with Delaware, Montana, Alaska, and Oregon) doesn’t collect sales tax, so it sees the work needed to collect sales tax as onerous. Thankfully, legal experts give New Hampshire a low chance of succeeding in this.

A fine china plate that is stronger than steel? That may now be possible due to Chinese inventor and jewelry designer Wallace Chan’s technology. This tech could likely be used to make stronger cups and plates.

Amazon is awash in fakes reports today’s Wall St Journal. Recently, I looked at an Amazon page selling Anna Weatherley. The page said the seller was “Anna Weatherley.” It wasn’t. If you clicked this name, it showed the seller as someone else. Why would the page mislead the shopper?

My conclusion is Amazon has a shady website, and it helps shady sellers sometimes sell fakes.

Have your registry sales slowed down? It might have nothing to do with your beautiful store, product selection or even competition from online retailers. This article from the NY Times might explain why.

Put a Ring on It? Millennial Couples Are in No Hurry
Young adults not only marry and have children later than previous generations, they take more time to get to know each other before tying the knot.

We wanted to share these beautiful tiles, YES, tiles, from Michael Aram.

Winner of Interior Design's 2017 Best of Year Award, Orchid Dimensional radiates with the graceful charm of delicate orchid flowers. Realistic crystalline white Thassos flowers dance across a smooth background of polished white or honed black marble. The pattern is drawn from homeware and jewelry designer Michael Aram's Orchid Collection and is crafted through a variety of techniques to achieve a product that's groundbreaking and incredibly beautiful. Orchid is stocked in black and white in its original carved dimensional style, and in a flat design that allows for a wider range of applications.Read rest of Chalk

Amazon is luring customers with fake reviews. Today’s Times shares how a bogus bookseller has 1,400 reviews and many of them make little sense. The motive: the bookseller is selling books at 100x the going rate. The goal is trick some elderly or mislead person into buying a book for $600 instead of $6. Since Amazon may get 30% of the sale, the higher fake price benefits it.

Happy to see Carol Schroeder as a speaker at this summer’s NY NOW. We’ve mentioned Carol’s book (in which we’re featured) many times. ...but this post comes with an asterisk. The retail industry is facing a huge cliff as Amazon bulldozes it. The NY NOW pamphlet doesn’t mention any amazon seminars. Amazon is the biggest threat to you and your business. Yet according to this slick marketing piece, stores should party like it’s 1999. It even suggests starting the day with mimosas. This show may be drunk with itself. The industry needs better leadership and it needs to be acting more quickly to fight Amazon.

We don’t need more trend speakers. We don’t need people suggesting more unique in-store experiences. NY NOW should cancel all speakers and give the entire stage to Scott Galloway. ...Read rest of Chalk
