Tableware Today Article: Chart Your Future Before Big Tech Does

Market buildings are looking down the barrel of a gun. To find out why, check out my article in this month's Tableware Today.

THE LAST WORD
CHART YOUR FUTURE BEFORE BIG TECH DOES
by JASON SOLAREK

Market buildings are starting to take digital seriously. Why, finally? Because Amazon is nipping at retailers’ heels? No. Because Zola is stealing indie stores’ registry business? No. Sadly, the main thing that’s brought markets up to speed has to do with their own dollars and ...Read more of post

Amazon and Chinese companies have teamed up to bypass Main Street and ship goods directly to doorsteps. This is hurting American manufacturing as well as local city governments. To accomplish this, they're misleading Americans by putting out press releases that cherry-pick statistics.

Follow these 3 steps to see the issue at hand:

1. In an Amazon press release last week, Amazon claimed:

"Independent third-party sellers – primarily small and medium-sized businesses – made ...Read more of post

There are millions of indie stores in the world who don’t get to succeed online. They get ripped off by web designers and coders, pay more in local taxes than big tech companies, don’t have access to cheap money from Wall St. (like big tech companies), and can’t protect themselves from hackers looking to steal credit cards. They are prevented them from running their business, helping their customers, and servicing their communities. Due to these expenses and obstacles, ...Read more of post

Good news: your indie store just gained some ground on Amazon.

About 60% of Amazon sales are via third-party sellers. They pass thru what it calls the 'marketplace.' These Amazon purchases have not historically been taxed because the purchase is made from a business in one state and shipped to another state. But that loophole started to close last year when the Supreme Court ruled that states can collect tax on these types of Internet purchases.

Many state laws have ...Read more of post

I’m just back from the Dallas show. I met with some wonderful people from the mart and they’re ready to go digital.

In general, I’m seeing that more market buildings are finally taking digital seriously. Why are they finally doing so? Because Amazon is nipping at their retailers heels? Because Zola is stealing the indie store’s registry business? No. Sadly, the main thing that brought the markets up to speed on the weather outside is: their own livelihood. Faire, a ...Read more of post

Rebecca Kassner, who owns Vera's Daughter, a gift shop in Michigan, had this to say:

"Are you saying that say AmericasMart should have an online source which shows all the lines that we would see at market, like Faire? As a small shop owner, I would much rather "shop" online at a site like Faire for all the products I would see at market. I would much rather take the $2,500 I spend to go to market on product and shop year round. Right now, because I only go to market once a year, I go to AmericasMart's website and individually click on each vendor that I am interested in. I visit their website to see what they are about. It is an overwhelming process. The way that Faire is set up is so much easier to use. If you are suggesting the markets go the way of Faire, I would love that."

Does your state give your small business back almost 50% of the taxes you paid? I doubt it, but that’s what California gives Best Buy and some other businesses. Today’s Times shares that local municipalities are giving kick backs to businesses in order to compete for business. While competition is healthy, it’s unfair and potentially detrimental to give tax breaks to some companies and not others, and give breaks that may be excessive.

California’s odd tax rules make ...Read more of post

Are Indie Stores 'Digitally Poor'?

There are millions of indie stores in the world who don’t get to succeed online. They get ripped off by web designers and coders, have to pay local taxes unlike many Amazon sellers, don’t have access to cheap money from Wall St. like Amazon.com, and get attacked by hackers looking to steal credit cards, all factors which prevent them from running their business, helping their customers, and servicing their communities. Amazon is bad for taxes. Teachers and hospitals rely on taxes. Why would they endorse Amazon? I believe they’re cutting off their nose to spite the face. I believe that teachers and hospital workers should shop local because local businesses statistically pay more in taxes and thereby help support local schools and hospitals.
